Smart Cities World – Internet of Things – Vendor lock-in and lack of interoperability still holding smart cities back

ABI Research analysis found that smart city standards are key to unlocking the full potential but the standards ecosystem is still a diverse network and can be confusing.

Talking about it is one thing, actually doing something about it is another. Meet Sensative Yggio Digitalization infrastructure Management System – the open standards-based bridge between any technology – IoT, IT, or OT – and vendor in the IoT and Smart City space.

Smart cities must do more to deliver value for citizens | ITProPortal

Why interoperability is the key to delivering real value from IoT-connected cities.

This is the value of Yggio.

The alternatives for massive IoT and Smart Cities or Buildings would be to either invest in one technology like 5G and try to use it for everything or embrace the different technologies with their strength in different use cases and link everything together with Yggio.

Smart cities and buildings help mitigate the climate challenge – Beijer Electronics

Smart cities connect buildings, properties, users, and infrastructure to become sustainable, user-friendly environments. Smart buildings need to be flexible and adapt as requirements are constantly changing. Property technology and digital solutions must work seamlessly together to make properties both comfortable and sustainable.

In this article, we present an overview of the collaboration between Sensative and Beijer Electronics and our collaborative solutions for smart cities and buildings.

Smart Buildings Industry Must Solve Its Own Complexity with Standards

We need to establish open and universal standards for connectivity between all devices, or some kind of data translation layer between all systems and devices. We need a system that would allow anyone to buy almost any product and have it work with their building system —a building could then embrace its uniqueness by creating a collection of smart tech to suit its individual needs. Only then can we begin to reach for the potential of smart buildings; when each building is free to use whatever combination of tech they see fit, when costs reduce to a rate that suits most buildings, and when design and setup time is vastly reduced.

We couldn’t agree more. This layer is already available on the market; Sensative’s Yggio Digitalization infrastructure Management System.

Smart building trends: Predictions for what’s to come – Smart Cities World

Franco Castaldini, ThoughtWire, rounds up the smart building trends to look out for.

Harbor Research has noted four critical needs for IoT platforms as they evolve in 2019 and beyond, including:

  • Enablement of real-time temporal, spatial and state-based contextual processing
  • Providing tools for development of real-time, stateful applications
  • Simultaneous and asynchronous action on any type of information from any device, storage or streaming source
  • Configurable software platform architecture enabling both peer-to-peer and client-server distribution of service

Predictive maintenance market niche topic to killer application in 10 years min

Predictive Maintenance Market: From Niche Topic to High ROI Application

Predictive maintenance has clearly evolved from the rather static condition-monitoring approach. It has become a viable IoT application that is delivering overwhelmingly positive ROI. Several technological developments have contributed to the rapid market expansion—notably, a simplified process of connecting IoT assets, major advancements in cloud services, and improvements in the accessibility of machine learning (ML)/data science frameworks.

Sensative provides the integration part in this digitalization journey. IoT Analytics call it “Intelligent data mesh” in the graph above. We call it Yggio – Digitalization Infrastructure Management System (DiMS).

OSCORE for end-to-end IoT security in resource-constrained devices

The new lightweight security protocol to secure CoAP messages could well become an industry standard. We implemented it in a smart city project.

New security technologies tested in a Smart City project, where, among others, U-blox and Sensative co-operates. In this blog post U-blox describes the OSCORE protocol in more detail.

In the system drawing below, there is a cloud service mentioned. That is where the U-blox part of the system connects to our platform Yggio, providing full end-to-end encryption from device to cloud service.

On the right side of the game: how open source is making digital laggards catch up

FIWARE CEO Ulrich Ahle speaks to Graeme Neill about how the Smart Cities for Germany programme is helping the country’s poor track record on digitising services and how the battle for public opinion on open-source has been won.

“He cites the case of India and its 100 Smart Cities program, which launched almost a decade ago. Despite its ambitions, the country came to a realization two years ago that each city has built its own silos. Ahle says: “That wheel has been invented several times and there were only limited synergies between the 100 selected cities. The public funding which was provided for this could have been spent more efficiently.”

Open Source, Open APIs, FIWARE standardized data models, system of systems, are the way forward. All part of Sensative’s Yggio.
