Background
In 2017 the City of Malmö decided that improving life for its citizens would take a digital transformation: a closer connection between the city and the people who live there, new forms of public service, and data that, once depersonalised, could be used by researchers, public authorities and businesses. The programme was called Digital Malmö.
Within it, the Smart City focus area set two concrete goals: a common IoT management platform for the whole city, and a first application in which the property and traffic departments could follow water levels in the canals and in Öresund in real time. The second goal came from the city’s cloudburst plan, drawn up after the heavy rainfall of 2014.
