A vessel at sea; The Connected Ship brought smart city technology on board

The Connected Ship - Nordic Innovation #P19041

Background

A ship is a small city that moves: it has its own power generation, water, climate control, logistics and security, all of it operated by systems from different suppliers that rarely share data. The same fragmentation that keeps buildings and cities from being managed on facts keeps vessels from it too.

The Connected Ship established a sensor network and data-sharing infrastructure on board, combining smart city technology with maritime systems to improve energy efficiency, enable predictive maintenance and strengthen cybersecurity, and to prepare vessels for exchanging data with smart ports.

Sensative’s role

Sensative contributed sensing and the operational data layer. The technical problem is the one the company works on ashore (many device types, many suppliers, one coherent data model), with the added constraints of a vessel: intermittent connectivity, harsh environment, and no possibility of a service visit at sea.

The project was funded by Nordic Innovation through its Nordic Smart Mobility and Connectivity programme and coordinated by Maritime Development Center in Denmark.
