Background

Smarta Offentliga Miljöer (smart public spaces) was run by Lund Municipality together with the City of Malmö, academia and a large number of companies and entrepreneurs, within the strategic innovation programme for the Internet of Things, IoT Sverige.

Rather than procuring one system for one purpose, the project put an open and free sensor network across two cities and then let real municipal problems find their way to it. More than twenty sub-projects were carried out under an agile model that let ideas be tested quickly and dropped cheaply.

Three grants, one initiative

The initiative was funded in stages: SOM (#2016-03894, Lund Municipality, 2016–2017), Smarta Offentliga Miljöer II (#2017-02803, Lund Municipality, 2017–2020) with its own sub-projects for operations, mapping and extensions, and IoT-säkerhet i offentlig miljö (#2018-03951, RISE, 2018–2020), which built a security demonstrator applying IETF standards for end-to-end protection from sensor to backend.

Together they built a network of some 70 actors and established the region as an IoT hub, and produced products, services and jobs that outlived the funding.

Where Yggio comes from

Sensative built Yggio inside SOM. The requirement came directly from what the project was trying to do: many sensor types, many suppliers, many municipal departments, and no appetite for a new integration project every time something was added.

That is still the platform’s purpose. Yggio is now in use in cities across Sweden and abroad, and the open, vendor-independent approach it took was set by the conditions of this project.
