Background

Industrial digitalisation increasingly depends on connecting Operational Technology such as control systems, machines, sensors, and industrial processes with modern IT infrastructure, edge computing, cloud services, and AI. These connections create major opportunities for data-driven optimisation and automation, but also introduce new challenges around cybersecurity, operational reliability, and control.

OTTO (Operational Technology for Reliable Interoperability) addresses this challenge by developing and demonstrating resilient digital infrastructure for industrial OT environments. The project focuses on how existing operational systems can be securely integrated with modern digital technologies without compromising the reliability and real-time requirements of critical processes.

The project brings together research organisations, technology providers, infrastructure operators, utilities, forestry, manufacturing, and real estate actors to develop solutions that can be validated in real operational environments.

Bridging OT and IT

Many industrial environments contain operational systems that were designed to operate independently and remain in service for decades. Connecting these systems directly to modern IT and cloud infrastructure can create security, interoperability, and lifecycle challenges.

OTTO develops reference architectures and clear interfaces between OT, IT, edge resources, cloud services, and external actors. A central focus is semantically structured and interoperable data flows that allow information to move between systems while maintaining security, traceability, and operational control.

Rather than replacing existing industrial systems, the project explores how heterogeneous technologies can become part of coherent systems-of-systems and provide a reliable foundation for future digital services.

Secure data and AI close to the process

Access to operational data creates opportunities for advanced analytics, automation, and AI, but industrial applications place very different requirements on digital infrastructure than conventional IT systems.

OTTO develops methods for using AI close to industrial processes while addressing real-time requirements, traceability, cybersecurity, and resilience. Data flows and digital services must continue to operate predictably even when parts of the surrounding infrastructure are disrupted.

The objective is to enable organisations to make greater use of industrial data and AI while ensuring that critical OT environments retain function, control, and operational reliability.

Sensative and Yggio

Sensative contributes its experience in IoT, interoperable data infrastructure, and integration between physical systems and digital services.

Yggio provides technologies relevant to the project’s OT/IT integration challenges, including semantic data models, interoperable data flows, edge-to-cloud architectures, and integration of heterogeneous devices and systems.

Through OTTO, these capabilities can be evaluated alongside technologies from other project partners and in real industrial environments, contributing to practical reference architectures for secure and scalable industrial digitalisation.

A reference model for resilient industrial digitalisation

OTTO validates its architectures and methods step by step using measurable KPIs and real pilot environments. The broad consortium allows the concepts to be evaluated across sectors with different operational requirements, including energy, water, forestry, manufacturing, buildings, and other critical infrastructure.

The project will turn these results into practical reference models, guidelines, and tools that organisations can use when connecting operational systems with modern digital infrastructure.

By combining interoperability, cybersecurity, edge computing, resilient data flows, and AI, OTTO aims to make industrial digitalisation easier to deploy without sacrificing the reliability and control required by critical operational systems.
