Background

Future digital systems will depend on much tighter integration between wireless communication, computing, software, data, security, and intelligent applications. Technologies such as 6G, edge computing, machine learning, sensing, and autonomous systems cannot be developed independently if they are to operate as reliable end-to-end solutions.

NextG2Com (Next Generation Communication and Computational Infrastructures and Applications) is a Vinnova Competence Centre led by Lund University. It brings together academia, industry, and public-sector organisations to conduct long-term research into future advanced communication and computing systems.

The centre takes a systems perspective, focusing on how individual technologies and components can be integrated into complete platforms supporting a wide range of future applications.

From communication networks to integrated computing platforms

Next-generation communication infrastructure is becoming more than a network for transporting data. Computing resources, sensing, positioning, data processing, and machine learning are increasingly becoming integrated parts of the infrastructure itself.

NextG2Com investigates technologies ranging from distributed MIMO and future 6G radio systems to integrated sensing and positioning, distributed computing, machine learning, robotics, and next-generation software platforms.

A central objective is to understand the interaction between these technology layers and develop architectures and design methods that allow them to operate together as complete communication and computational systems.

Distributed intelligence from edge to cloud

As connected systems become more intelligent, deciding where data is processed and where applications and AI models execute becomes increasingly important. Some tasks require the scale of cloud infrastructure, while others need to operate close to devices and physical processes with low latency, local autonomy, and greater control over data.

NextG2Com explores integrated data engineering and machine learning together with communication and computational infrastructure. This includes secure and privacy-preserving data collection, machine-learning analytics, and the integration of MLOps pipelines into the underlying communication and computing platform.

The result is a foundation for distributed intelligent systems where communication, computing, data, and AI can be coordinated across devices, edge infrastructure, and cloud environments.

Sensative and Yggio

Sensative contributes experience from large-scale IoT systems and Yggio, providing a practical environment for exploring how communication, edge computing, data management, AI, and cloud services can operate as one distributed system.

A key area of interest is the evolution of Yggio towards distributed edge-cloud architectures, where multiple Yggio instances can operate at different levels of the infrastructure. Data, applications, rules, and AI processing can then be placed closer to where they are needed while still participating in a larger connected system.

This provides a practical foundation for investigating issues such as distributed execution, local autonomy, data governance, resilience and interoperability, and how future communication and computing infrastructure can support real-world IoT applications.

From research to real-world demonstrators

NextG2Com is designed to connect fundamental research with practical experimentation. Its research is organised into five technology themes together with a sixth theme dedicated to demonstrators, testing, and system integration.

Through research infrastructures provided by the centre’s partners, technologies developed across the different themes can be combined and evaluated as integrated end-to-end systems. Demonstrators provide environments in areas such as industry, healthcare, and sea rescue where research results can be tested against real operational requirements.

By bringing communication, computing, software, data, AI, and applications together in working systems, NextG2Com aims to accelerate the transition from individual research results to technologies that can create value in industry and society.
