Schematic illustration: sensors in the rooms of a building feeding an operational data layer

Background

Individual metering and debiting of heat, water and electricity per apartment is one of the cheapest ways to cut consumption in multi-dwelling buildings, but it has traditionally arrived as a closed system: one supplier’s meters, one supplier’s software, one supplier’s service contract.

Eez and Shape asked what happens if the network underneath is open instead: whether the same metering services can be delivered at lower cost when several providers can reach the same sensors.

Results

The project delivered SHAPE, an open platform for intelligent multi-family buildings, and prototypes demonstrating lower investment costs, lower operating costs and reduced power consumption. External service providers could reach apartment sensors and controls through standardised interfaces.

Sensative coordinated the project, funded by Vinnova with 300 000 SEK. The pattern of open interfaces first and services second carried directly into Yggio.
