Background

Cyber-Physical Systems are becoming fundamental to critical infrastructure, smart cities, smart buildings, and emergency services. As sensors, actuators, communication networks, and digital platforms become increasingly interconnected, the potential impact of cyberattacks grows, affecting data and IT systems as well as physical infrastructure and essential services.

Securing these environments is particularly challenging because Cyber-Physical Systems often combine heterogeneous technologies, large and dynamic networks, and resource-constrained devices. Traditional security approaches can therefore be too complex or resource-intensive for many IoT and edge environments.

CYPRESS addresses these challenges by developing lightweight, scalable, and interoperable cybersecurity solutions for Cyber-Physical Systems. The project focuses on secure communication, access and key management, edge computing, intrusion and anomaly detection, secure device management, and trusted software updates, with solutions designed to protect systems by design while remaining practical for constrained devices and distributed infrastructure.

Secure and resilient edge computing

CYPRESS is developing security technologies that allow Cyber-Physical Systems to operate securely across distributed edge and cloud environments. The work includes resilient network architectures, secure communication, identity and access management, automated device onboarding, software updates, and intrusion and anomaly detection.

A key objective is to combine strong end-to-end security with solutions lightweight enough to operate on constrained IoT devices. By building on open standards and interoperable technologies, CYPRESS aims to make advanced cybersecurity practical across heterogeneous systems while avoiding dependence on proprietary security ecosystems.

Sensative and Yggio Edge-Cloud

Sensative’s work in CYPRESS focuses on evolving Yggio from a central IoT platform into a secure distributed Edge-Cloud architecture. Multiple Yggio instances can operate at the edge and in the cloud, enabling systems to continue operating locally while selected data and services are securely shared across the wider infrastructure.

This architecture enables data, rules, and automation to remain close to where they are needed, supporting autonomous operation, improved privacy, redundancy, and data sovereignty. CYPRESS also strengthens Yggio with improved security, scalability, software distribution, and integration of security technologies developed by other project partners.

The result is intended to extend Yggio into environments with particularly demanding security requirements, including smart cities, smart buildings, utilities, and critical infrastructure.

Open security for connected infrastructure

Interoperability and open standards are central to CYPRESS. The project develops and validates technologies for secure communication, access control, key management, and device lifecycle management, while contributing results to international standardisation activities including the IETF.

By combining open security standards with distributed IoT and edge computing, CYPRESS aims to create an ecosystem where devices, platforms, and services from different vendors can work together securely. This reduces vendor lock-in and creates a foundation for resilient digital infrastructure that can evolve as new technologies and security requirements emerge.
