Background

Digitalising critical infrastructure means connecting things that were never designed to be connected. The networks at the edge, with sensors, meters, controllers and legacy equipment, are heterogeneous, long-lived and often severely constrained in power and processing, which rules out most conventional security mechanisms.

CRITISEC developed security products, services and standards for exactly this layer, addressing legacy systems, constrained devices and the scalability required when a single utility runs tens of thousands of endpoints.

Sensative’s role

Sensative’s sensors are among the most constrained devices in such a network: battery-powered, expected to last for years, communicating over low-bandwidth radio. Making those devices verifiably secure without shortening their service life was the company’s contribution to the project.

CRITISEC ran within the EUREKA cluster CELTIC-NEXT with 13 partners from Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg and Taiwan, and was preceded by a Vinnova-funded feasibility study (#2017-05025) that shaped the international application.
