Background

Video is the largest single consumer of network capacity, and every stage of delivering it costs energy: encoding, transport, caching, and finally decoding on a device running off a battery. Optimising any one stage in isolation tends to push consumption into another.

CONVINcE took the whole chain as its subject, working on power reduction from the head end through the delivery network to the terminal, across a consortium of 15 organisations in France, Finland, Sweden and Turkey with a total budget of €11.7M.

Sensative’s role

Sensative participated in the Swedish part of the consortium with funding from Vinnova. The company’s domain is devices that have to run for years on a single battery, which is the extreme end of the same problem the project addressed at network scale.

The project ran within the EUREKA cluster Celtic-Plus and was coordinated by Harmonic in France.
