Background

An electricity system with more wind and solar needs demand that can move. Most of that movable demand sits in buildings, in heating, ventilation, hot water, charging and lighting, but the property owner who would have to shift it has little visibility of what the grid needs, and the energy supplier has no access to the building systems that could respond.

BUS (Balanced Urban energy System) built the connection between the two: a platform for sharing the data needed to coordinate, together with control of the building systems that act on it.

Business models and privacy

Technology was only half the problem. Through workshops with industry experts the project also worked out business models and the legal framework for this kind of energy collaboration, including how it can be done without affecting personal privacy, which matters as soon as building data can be traced to individual households.

Sensative coordinated the project, funded by Vinnova with 500 000 SEK.
