Even though everything is continuously changing in today’s dynamic world, one thing is not: Technology keeps playing a crucial role in easing and improving our quality of life. As technology advances, things become smarter; smartphones, smart TVs, smart homes, and even smart windows and doors!
Through the integration of IoT technologies, cloud computing, and sensors, the smart home concept has come into our lives. Smart home technologies connect residents and the house through online applications, monitored and controllable anywhere, anytime.
It might seem like a luxury at first, but it is rapidly becoming a requirement by ensuring plenty of benefits for the customers, such as better security and safety, comfort, and convenience. Also, companies must keep up with the current technology and adapt to the innovations accordingly in this digital era so that they can retain their presence in the market and move the business forward.
The shortcut to "smart"
Sensative Strips sensors are stand-alone products but also easy to integrate into other products, making them smart, with all the benefits of Strips, like the extreme battery life time. For instance, a windows manufacturer can enhance their existing products by simply milling out a groove for the Strip. The rest is about bundling, logistics, and business development.
Towards a smarter world with Gilje
Gilje, one of the largest window & door manufacturers in Norway, is a first mover in the window & door industry, providing connectivity and possibility to connect their window and doors to digital services.
The family-owned company has a long history of innovation and success in Norway. Gilje is pioneering smart windows and doors under a new brand name, “Gilje Sense.”
Gilje Sense is the result of a cooperation between three Scandinavian companies; Gilje, Sensative, and Future Home. While Gilje manufactures the windows and doors, Sensative provides the Strips sensors which give open/close or lock/unlocked information, and Future Home creates the application to manage/ view the data.

Think smarter to make things smarter
The quality and customer-focused company, Gilje, has composed a cross-functional team involving people from different departments to come up with the best innovation idea by using/uniting multiple perspectives. After the team decided to invest in digitalization, this required a lot of research and testing to agree on how and with whom to cooperate, as Kenneth Gilje (Lean manager) shares during our interview. It was a significant decision to make since both the collaboration with the other companies and internal departments plays a crucial role in smart doors and windows to happen.
Kenneth explains: “We chose Sensative Strips since they are very convenient to adapt to our current products, and it makes manufacturing easy.” Through a small change, the windows and doors have become smarter than ever, creating new market and customer opportunities. Sensative Strips are integrated invisibly in the Gilje products with small effort in production or the after-market. Strips convey useful information such as locked/unlocked or open/close and give users complete control.

While already having a strong position in the market, what motivates Gilje to think outside the box? Why embrace the smart home concept, make new collaborations outside of the company, and produce smart products?
In the digital age, innovation is a must. These smart products create additional value for customers by making their lives easier, with all the technology hidden. As Kenneth shares during the interview, “the market may not be fully mature yet, but the concept sets a new standard in the market. It is quite promising for the future.”
Smart all in one!
Gilje Sense products come with remarkable features as an extra option for all their window & doors: and provide an invisible solution that connects to smart home or building systems. It enables 100% control for the end-user without the necessity of being at home and adding value for real estate owners who provide a smart apartment solution.
At the launch of the Gilje Sense at fairs, they have had a hit with customers and received many positive reactions. Convenience, security, and easy-to-use: all in one!
